Members of a Cornish political youth group attended a political campaign and strategy weekend in Wales this month to learn more about electoral campaigning.
Three members of Kernow X, the youth group of Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall, were invited to attend the training session in Wales by the youth group of the Welsh nationalist political party, Plaid Cymru. The invite came following recent contact between Kernow X and members of the Welsh youth group, Cymru X, on issues that both organisations have in common.
Both groups have worked closely together over several years, particularly within the European sphere, and have also in the past shared knowledge and experience about attracting young people into politics and political youth campaigning in general. After the weekend in Wales, the new 23 year old Chairperson for Kernow X, Jowan Rowe, said:
“The whole weekend was inspirational from beginning to end and gave us all added enthusiasm and impetus to put all that we learned in Wales into practise here in Cornwall. Of course the Welsh and Cornish political experiences and situations are quite different, but there are also many similarities between our two nations, where political strategies are easily transferrable.
“Kernow X has had a busy year so far and we are growing at an incredible rate. We have recently had our Treasurer elected onto Redruth Town Council, our convenor elected as president of a European youth organisation and we have attended and spoken at political conferences in Brittany and Scotland.”
The secretary of Kernow X, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, said:
“After years of relative inactivity, Kernow X has seen rapid increase in its membership over the last year, thanks to the work of a dedicated group of activists, who have organised gigs, talks and attended youth projects for politically minded young people in Cornwall. The oncoming year has a lot more in store for the group, including a debate being organised at the European Parliament by Kernow X where the Cornish question will be discussed and a campaign to promote Cornish heritage. It is indeed exciting times ahead!”
